The Kämp Block’s Landmark Property is Being Developed for Decades to Come

Kämp Galleria is built within five historically significant landmark properties. One of these, the Helander House, built in 1890, is now undergoing a major renovation. As part of the restoration, the building’s grand and protected staircase will also be meticulously refurbished.

Ilmarinen, the owner of the properties and responsible for the renovations, is contributing to keeping the heart of Helsinki vibrant and attractive, even for international visitors. Another significant aspect of the project is that it has provided employment for over 200 construction workers and designers.

The Pohjoisesplanadi entrance to Kämp Galleria was reopened in February.

“We approach renovations with a vision for the needs of future decades.”

Currently, an extensive renovation of the basement level is underway, expected to continue until autumn.

– Unfortunately, renovation work always causes noise and temporary disruptions. However, we take a long-term perspective, considering the needs of the coming decades. This allows us to offer high-quality, modern facilities and an improved customer experience for the users of these properties, says project manager Pirjo Pernu from Ilmarinen.

Hotel Kämp Draws from History but Reaches for the Future

Helsinki’s most luxurious hotel expands and becomes even more elegant.

The adjacent Helander House on Pohjoisesplanadi is currently being integrated into the hotel. With this expansion, Hotel Kämp will gain 22 new rooms and suites.

Hotel Kämp has played a role in significant moments of Finland’s history. The goal of the expansion and the ongoing extensive renovation project is to enhance both the hotel’s and Helsinki’s appeal as a prime destination for meetings, events, and memorable experiences well into the future.

“While we cherish and respect the soul of the hotel, we are also shaping it into a place that will continue to hold great significance for people in the future.”

At the same time, all 179 existing rooms and suites are being refurbished to meet the expectations of modern travelers seeking luxury accommodation and services. The renovations will even be visible from the street, as the hotel’s main entrance will be moved from Kluuvikatu back to its original location on Pohjoisesplanadi. Additionally, the hotel’s bar and restaurant spaces, as well as their concepts, will be completely redesigned. Hotel General Manager Tuomas Liewendahl, what is driving the hotel to undergo such an extensive transformation?

– Hotel Kämp is one of Finland’s most historic buildings, filled with stories and memories. While we preserve and respect the essence of the hotel, we are also creating a space that will remain meaningful to people for years to come.

Hotel Kämp remains open throughout the entire renovation. The new expansion rooms will be available to guests starting in May 2025, while the new entrance and restaurants are expected to open in early autumn. The entire renovation is projected to be completed by spring 2026.
